Registered Nutritional Therapist – Dip CNM, mBANT, mCNHC

I started The IBS and Gut Health Clinic after seeing many patients in my general practice who’d been through every test their GP or gastroenterologist could offer, been told “it’s just IBS,” and sent away with little more than a leaflet. That’s not good enough. Digestive symptoms always have a cause and when we address the cause, symptoms resolve.

I trained at the UK’s leading nutrition institute, College of Naturopathic Medicine, graduating in 2015. I’m a registered member of BANT and CNHC, the two governing bodies for nutritional therapy in the UK. Since then I’ve worked with patients with a wide range of gut issues such as IBS, SIBO, IBD, reflux, and less clear cases where symptoms are influences up with stress, hormonal issues or medications.

Two men sit facing each other in a bright, softly lit room during what appears to be a counseling or coaching session. In the foreground, an older man with a shaved head, wearing a cream-colored sweater, is seen from behind and side profile, listening attentively. Facing him, a younger bald man with a short beard, dressed in a navy blue sweater over a white collared shirt, leans forward slightly with his hands clasped, speaking earnestly. Between them sits a mustard-yellow armchair. To the right, a glass vase holds a bouquet of pale pink and cream peonies, adding a soft, warm touch to the neutral-toned room with its light walls and sheer curtains.

Why I Chose Nutrition

After 8 years as a professional musician, my health was suffering. It wasn’t down to any specific illness — a poor diet and lack of sleep were leaving me low on energy and feeling sub-par. Around the same time my music career ended, a close family member was diagnosed with terminal cancer. We both began improving our diets together, and both felt the benefit. This was my first real understanding of the scope of nutritional therapy: for me, it meant improving my life and supporting my long-term wellness; for my family member, it meant helping them feel healthier in the time they had left.

From there, my interest grew and grew — starting out as a general practitioner, seeing patients seeking nutritional support for a wide range of health issues, before eventually becoming solely focused on the gut.

“I have suffered with tummy cramps for years and years, typically having one attack every 4-6 weeks. It is now a year since I had a tummy cramp and I can say without hesitation that the treatment has been life-changing. I even have a normal unrestricted diet. I thoroughly recommend the Clinic to any sufferers from IBS or gut problems.”

Bill Holroyd CBEPost-infectious IBS and cramping

“I can't thank and recommend Martin enough, he has quite literally changed my life if I could give more stars I would! I can't thank Martin enough for giving me my life back, I never thought in a million years 4 months ago that I would be in the place that I am now physically and mentally!”

Frequently asked questions

Do you work alongside my GP or specialist?

Yes, nutritional therapy works alongside conventional treatments. Not only for gut issues, but if other conditions are present it’s important we are aware of any medications being taken.

Can you help if I'm already on medication?

Yes. Medications may influence the decisions we make around how put a treatment in place for you. This means we need to build a plan taking these into consideration. If decisions need to be made regarding medications, we’ll flag that clearly.

What if I've had this for years and nothing's worked?

Most people who come to the clinic feel they’ve already tried everything: various diets, numerous supplements, and extensive testing. Despite this, the root cause of their symptoms is often still unaddressed. Many have consulted multiple practitioners and attempted various treatments with little success — only to finally experience real symptom resolution once they’re under our care.

Do I need a formal diagnosis before booking?

Most people have already been through the NHS to rule out more serious or life-threatening conditions. But even with an IBS diagnosis, our approach is to address the underlying issue — not just treat the label.

How involved will you be personally in my case?

Martin Cohen is the lead practitioner at the clinic. He will personally support you each step of the way.
